Winslow Homer, Basket of Clams

Title: Basket of Clams
Medium: Watercolor
Year of creation: 1873
Describe as much as you can about the artwork.  There are two young boys walking on the beach, I'd say about 9 and 6. There are fish and seaweed on the beach also. Looks warm. There are two kids, and a dead fish on the beach. The kids are walking up the beach with a basket of clams probably, and the dead fish is dead.. In the background there is a beached shipped, and on the pier. It is around 11 maybe noon, and the artist used warm colors.

Point of interest/CompositionThe boys attract my eyes first because they are located a little below the middle of the painting. He draws your attention because of the color on the boys undershirt, which is red.

Balance - This is asymmetrical.

Depth/Perspective- The horizon line is the pier, right about the ship. The foreground is the beach, while the middle ground is the ship, and the background is the pier, and the sky. The background is not too far away. It is probably 100 feet away. I have good depth perception.

Mood – They look tired the boys do. You can tell their mood just by looking at their facial expressions.

Interpret - He is trying to communicate the life of a clammer. They look very tired, and possible that their father(s) wanted them to do this.
